Principal Controls Automation Engineer

An established leader in advanced automation solutions for the medical device sector is seeking a Principal Automation Engineer (Controls) to join their growing Galway-based team. This is a unique opportunity to play a pivotal role in the design and delivery of bespoke automation systems for complex manufacturing processes.

As part of a multi-disciplinary engineering team, you’ll work across the full project lifecycle—from concept through to commissioning—creating cutting-edge, high-performance automation equipment used in regulated environments.

Key Requirements:

• Level 8 qualification in Engineering or a related discipline

• 10+ years’ experience in industrial automation, with a strong focus on PLC/HMI development (Allen Bradley experience preferred)

• Deep expertise in motion control, robotics, machine vision and automation of complex equipment

• Strong communicator and team player, with a proactive and problem-solving mindset

• Quality-focused with a structured and organised approach

• Willingness to travel occasionally as needed (valid driving licence required)

Key Responsibilities:

• Design and develop machine control software for PLCs, robotics, motion systems, HMI, SCADA, and vision systems

• Lead the programming, testing, and commissioning of automated equipment

• Specify control system hardware and components

• Collaborate closely with mechanical, electrical, and project engineering teams

• Support technical documentation and validation deliverables (URS, FDS, FAT, etc.)

• Mentor and provide technical guidance to other automation engineers
