Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, you will play a key role in the development of next-generation medical technology platforms, taking mechanical designs from early-stage concepts and product architecture through detailed development, validation and manufacturing release.
Working as part of a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary R&D environment, you will have the opportunity to influence technical direction from the earliest stages of development, solve complex engineering challenges and introduce innovative mechanical solutions for advanced medical products that can ultimately be taken into volume production.
This is an opportunity for an experienced mechanical engineer who enjoys ownership, innovation and hands-on product development, and who wants to work alongside engineers across mechanical, electronic, manufacturing and quality disciplines.
Please note that this is an on-site position based in Cork.
Responsibilities

Lead the mechanical design and development of new medical technology platforms from concept generation through to manufacturing release.

Work within the Future Technologies Team to develop innovative mechanical solutions for next-generation medical products and technology platforms.

Contribute to product architecture and influence key technical and design decisions from the earliest stages of development.

Develop complex mechanical designs incorporating sheet metal, plastics, machined components and assemblies.

Investigate and resolve complex design, performance, reliability and manufacturability challenges.

Introduce and evaluate new technologies, materials and manufacturing processes.

Work closely with manufacturing and supplier partners to ensure designs are robust, scalable, cost-effective and suitable for volume production.

Apply Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA) principles throughout the product development lifecycle.

Produce and maintain engineering documentation in accordance with quality, regulatory and engineering requirements.

Participate in design reviews, technical assessments, verification activities and cross-functional problem-solving.

Provide technical guidance and mentoring to engineers and designers within the wider team.

Manage technical deliverables, project priorities and agreed development milestones.
Requirements
-
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.

Approximately 5–7 years’ experience in mechanical product design and development.

Strong experience designing complex products for manufacture and volume production.

Proven experience with CNC machining, tooling, manufacturing processes and mechanical assemblies.

Strong understanding and practical application of DFM/DFMA principles.

Experience developing sheet metal, plastic and machined component designs.

Strong analytical and problem-solving ability, with the confidence to tackle complex engineering challenges.

Experience taking products through the full development lifecycle, from concept through to manufacturing.

Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

A practical, hands-on approach to engineering and product development.
Technical Skills
-
Advanced CAD proficiency, ideally with SolidWorks or a similar 3D CAD platform.

Strong understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).

Experience applying international engineering and manufacturing standards.

Experience with simulation, Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and thermal analysis.

Ability to assess design trade-offs and make robust engineering decisions based on technical, manufacturing and commercial considerations.

Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, materials and manufacturing processes.
Desirable Experience

Experience within medical device, medtech, regulated, high-reliability or safety-critical industries.

Experience developing advanced electromechanical products or complex engineered systems.

Exposure to emerging technologies, innovative materials or advanced manufacturing techniques.

Experience collaborating with global engineering, manufacturing and supplier teams.

Previous technical leadership, mentoring or project leadership experience.

Experience with New Product Introduction (NPI), design transfer and manufacturing scale-up.

Experience working on products where mechanical, electronic and software technologies come together.
