Photonics System Engineer – Galway

An innovative scale-up at the forefront of optical communications is expanding its team and seeking a motivated Photonics System Engineer to help develop and deliver cutting-edge optical communications technology. Join a dynamic, fast-paced environment working alongside top innovators in photonics and optical systems. You will play a key role supporting R&D activities, designing and testing advanced photonic and optical systems for high-speed communication applications, including coherent and direct detect transceivers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the design, development and testing of photonic systems and subsystems for satellite and terrestrial optical communications.

  • Develop and conduct experiments related to optical system performance metrics such as OSNR, BER and receiver sensitivity.

  • Build simulation models for optical transmission system design, modulation techniques and satellite link budgets.

  • Perform lab-based characterization and testing of optical components, including those for space environments.

  • Collaborate closely with internal teams and external partners, including commercial and European research projects, to communicate testing plans and results.

  • Assist with photonic system assembly, integration and test.

  • Identify and qualify photonic and electrical components and suppliers.

  • Support project management activities to ensure delivery milestones are met.

  • Contribute to contract tenders and research proposals.

  • Prepare technical documentation adhering to quality assurance standards.

Who You Are:

  • Experienced in photonic systems engineering, free space optical communications, or related fields.

  • Skilled in optical transmission system design and testing.

  • Proficient in simulation and modeling tools for optical systems.

  • Hands-on with laboratory characterization of optical components.

  • Strong communicator capable of working across multidisciplinary teams and with external stakeholders.
