Lead Electronic Engineer – Power Electronics & Medical Technology

The Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Lead Electronic Engineer to join an innovative Future Technologies team within a global technology organisation in Cork.

This is a key technical leadership position within an innovative R&D and technology development team, focused on creating new-to-world technologies and differentiated products across medical electronics, power electronics and advanced energy systems.

The team is developing next-generation technologies for the medical devices sector, including advanced electrosurgical generators, pulsed electric field technologies, ablation systems and other emerging surgical energy applications. The role will also provide opportunities to explore high-efficiency power supply architectures for advanced industrial applications.

You will combine deep technical expertise with innovation and hands-on engineering, taking emerging concepts through research, prototyping and proof-of-concept development towards technology readiness and future product development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the conception and development of advanced medical electronics and power electronics technologies.

  • Research and evaluate emerging technologies in power conversion, surgical energy delivery and high-efficiency power systems.

  • Develop prototypes, proof-of-concept platforms and technology demonstrators.

  • Provide technical leadership across complex electronics and power engineering challenges.

  • Design and analyse systems, subsystems and circuits against technical, cost, quality and schedule requirements.

  • Drive technology readiness and ensure concepts are developed into proven engineering solutions.

  • Provide expert guidance on power electronics design, control strategies and system integration.

  • Evaluate and implement emerging technologies for advanced medical and surgical applications.

  • Engage with customers and internal stakeholders to understand complex application requirements and translate these into technical solutions.

  • Collaborate with Product Development teams to mature and transfer technologies into future product development programmes.

  • Work cross-functionally with manufacturing, quality, purchasing, programme management and other engineering functions.

  • Ensure designs meet relevant regulatory, safety and reliability requirements for medical applications.

  • Lead, mentor and develop a multidisciplinary engineering team, promoting technical excellence, innovation and collaboration.

  • Contribute to the development of intellectual property and differentiated technology platforms.

Technical Expertise

  • Strong experience developing power electronics prototypes and products.

  • Advanced knowledge of power conversion topologies, high-frequency switching and control systems.

  • Strong electronic design and system-level engineering capability.

  • Experience taking early-stage technology concepts through prototyping and technology maturation.

  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently on complex engineering challenges.

  • A strategic and innovative approach to technology development.

  • Experience influencing technical decisions across multidisciplinary teams.

  • Strong coaching, mentoring and technical leadership capability.

  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced R&D and Future Technologies environment.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience in medical electronics, medical devices or high-reliability systems.

  • Knowledge of electrosurgical technologies, pulsed electric fields, ablation or surgical energy systems.

  • Experience developing high-efficiency power supply architectures.

  • Experience working on new-to-world technology, emerging technology or early-stage product development programmes.

  • Demonstrable experience contributing to intellectual property development.

  • Experience taking proof-of-concept technologies towards commercial product development.

Experience & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electronic/Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.

  • Ideally a Master’s or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics or a related field.

  • 8+ years’ experience in highly technical electronics design and development.

  • Proven progression into technical leadership and responsibility for complex engineering programmes.

  • Experience within medical, high-reliability or other technically demanding environments would be advantageous.

Travel: Approximately 10% domestic and international travel
